How do I become a member of the Assembly or Senate in NJ?

A legislator must live in the district he or she represents.

Senators have to be at least 30 and have to live in New Jersey for at least four years before being elected.

Members of the Assembly must be at least 21 and state residents for two years.

Candidate for Federal or State Office

To appear on the ballot for one of the following offices, your petition is filed with the New Jersey Secretary of State’s Division of Elections:

  • President
  • Presidential Delegates
  • Presidential Electors
  • US Senator
  • Member of US House of Representatives
  • Governor
  • NJ State Senator
  • Member of the NJ General Assembly
