New Jersey Needs More Women in High-Level Political, Elected and Appointed Positions

Jennifer Mancuso, the President of the Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey (WPCNJ), testified on Wednesday during the Workgroup on Harassment, Misogyny and Sexual Assault in New Jersey Politics hearing.  The committee, lead by Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver and Senator Loretta Weinberg, met to further discuss sexual harassment and misogyny in New Jersey politics.

Jennifer was quoted in Insider NJ for stating "sexual harassment is no surprise to any woman in state politics." She discussed that New Jersey needs more elected and appointed women in high-level political positions in government. And the place to start, was to put more women on the state's Reapportionment Commission.

We need to encourage and support more women who are willing to serve in positions of power, and we must hold our current leaders accountable when they do not facilitate that objective. Right now, both the Democratic and Republican Party have a chance to show that they are serious about changing current culture - which shapes what happens in private conversations
and more intimate interactions - and that they are willing to do something about ensuring
women and other marginalized groups are better represented, better supported and better
valued.

One of the WPCNJ's core objectives is to increase the number of elected and appointed women in office. It's clear achieving that goal requires working to remove barriers that hinder women from getting involved, or staying involved, in politics. New Jersey needs to do a better job supporting and promoting women's political leadership.

WPCNJ Announces Endorsement of 38 Women Assembly Candidates for 2019 Election

Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey
Announces Endorsement of 38 Women Assembly Candidates for 2019 Election

Trenton, NJ - The Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey (WPCNJ) proudly endorses 38 women Assembly candidates for the General Election this November. The endorsed candidates embrace and are committed to upholding WPCNJ's mission to protect reproductive freedom and promote equal rights for women in New Jersey.

"These endorsements reflect a strong showing of women candidates whose platforms are consistent with our mission," said WPCNJ Political Resources Director Shari Weiner. "We are pleased to endorse this diverse group of talented women who are ready, willing and able to represent all New Jersey citizens with their unique perspectives."

According to The Center of American Women (CAWP), women hold a mere 37 of the 120 New Jersey legislative seats, which is 30.8%. "Women make up more than 50% of voters, however, their elected representation pales in comparison," said Weiner. "It is incumbent upon organizations such as ours to endorse and support these women candidates and break that glass ceiling."

The Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey Political Action Committee has made significant contributions to candidates in the 2019 election cycle. The WPCNJ PAC supports candidates that align with the mission of the Women's Political Caucus.

WPCNJ Calls for the Removal of Judges Troiano and Silva

Trenton, NJ – The Women’s Political Caucus of New Jersey (WPCNJ) calls for the removal of Superior Court Judges James Troiano of Monmouth County and Marcia Silva of Middlesex County from the bench for their mishandling of separate and unrelated teenage sexual assault allegations.

“Judges James Troiano and Marcia Silva failures to charge 16-year old alleged rapists as adults in unrelated sexual assaults cases involving minors are appalling. Troiano and Silva flagrantly disregarded the emotional and physical harm suffered by the victims in these cases, and instead appeared more concerned for the academic prospects of their attackers or the status of the attackers’ families.

Not only are their gross misjudgments an affront to the victims in these specific cases, but their decisions and comments send the worst possible message to victims of sexual assault – that your victimization may not be weighed as heavily as the good grades or good family of your attacker.

There is no place for Judges Troiano and Silva in New Jersey’s judicial system. We call for their immediate removal from the bench.

WPCNJ commends the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey for overturning the decisions of Judge James Troiano and Judge Marcia Silva.

WPCNJ also supports the recommendations put forth by New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NJCASA) Executive Director, and WPCNJ Board member, Patricia Teffenhart, which include training requirements for judges to ensure the unique trauma associated with sexual assaults is better understood and addressed within our judicial system.” (NJCASA Statement: Judicial Comments, the Justice System, & Responding to Sexual Violence | NJCASA)

WPCNJ, founded in 1972, is a chapter of the National Women's Political Caucus, is a multi-partisan organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in elected and appointed positions in government, protecting reproductive freedom, and promoting equal rights for women.
