Today’s #TBT post is to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia where Hillary Clinton was nominated as the Democratic Nominee for President just two weeks ago. This was the first time a major party has nominated a woman, and members of the Women's Political Caucus New Jersey (WPCNJ) Democratic Task Force (DTF) were there throughout the week witnessing the historic event. WPCNJ President Chrissy Buetas, WPCNJ VP Finance Grace Strom Power, WPCNJ Board Member Kelly Stewart Maer, WPCNJ Middlesex County Board Member Babs Siperstein were delegates and Board Members: Eileen Della Volle, Rebecca Moll Freed, Andrea Katz, Andrea Katz, Esq., Rosemary Bernardi, Lisa Chapman, Patricia Teffenhart and Shari Weiner attended the convention as well.
Board member Kelly Stewart Maer spearheaded New Jersey efforts for the Hillary for America Campaign(HFA) as early as the beginning of 2015. She served as the campaigns Official Registered Agent heading up HFA delegate operations and served as the DNC, HFA Whip Captain for the entire NJ delegation during the DNC convention in Philadelphia.
WPCNJ Endorsed Legislators in the delegation included: Senator Sandra Bolden Cunningham, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera, Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver, Assemblywoman Nellie Pou, Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, Senator Teresa Ruiz, Assemblywoman Shovanda Sumter, Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker, Assemblywoman Valerie Vanieri Huttle, and Senator Loretta Weinberg.
WPCNJ Members in the delegation included: Patricia Campos-Medina, Jennifer Holdsworth. Laura Matos, Tricia Mueller, Maggie Moran, Arlene Quinones Perez, and Peg Schaffer. For complete list of the NJ delegation, click 2016 NJ Delegation.
There were many fun events throughout the week including delegate breakfasts, after parties, visits to historic sites in Philly and the occasional photo opportunity with the donkey statues which were located around town. Members attended caucus meetings as well as networking events interacting with energized democrats from around the country. Checkout WPCNJ DTF member's photos of the DNC in Philly.
On Tuesday of the convention week, U. S. Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey’s twelfth congressional district addressed the crowd at the DNC Tuesday night alongside House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and a slew of women members of the House. Rep Coleman is the first African-American woman to be elected to congress from NJ. NJ has never elected a woman to the U.S. Senate. During her speech, she highlighted the economy and ended with “America is stronger when everyone has a chance to succeed.”
